Project Description

1) Briefly describe the Project and what student roles and responsibilities it will involve.

Second Harvest Heartland is a food bank, so its primary role entails behind the scenes work; they do not provide direct food assistance to individuals and families, but instead supply food to kitchens, food shelves, shelters, etc. "Second Harvest Heartland directly supports 950 non-profit member agencies and programs that provide food and support for the ill, the needy, working families, seniors and children to 59 counties in our Minnesota and Wisconsin service area."

There are currently about 20 volunteer positions open for Second Harvest Heartland; these positions vary in their job descriptions and frequency. I am interested in several areas that will hopefully combine understanding how the system works and physically going out/connecting with people who need help: Assistant (assisting executive staff), Clerical (light office work), Corporate Researcher (helping to launch a new corporate relations program), Data Entry (help with data entry), Drive Through Assistant (help bag groceries and carry out food boxes to clients cars), Drive Through Desk Worker, Food Box Packer, Food Rescuer, Homebound Deliverer, Records Management, and Site Volunteer (oversee the distribution to distribution sites). After contact has been established with Dennie Scott, I will know what roles and responsibilities I will have in relation to where Second Harvest Heartland needs the most help.
