Poehler Lecture

The Poehler Lecture was inundated with personal experiences and the ways that faith and learning are connected especially at Concordia. One notable comment conveyed that the learning of facts is not as important as teaching the mind to think. This is an important comment because people should be taught to think for themselves. This is a very similar goal to that of the Honors Program at Concordia.

This goal of the Honors program obviously coincides with the mission statement of Concordia St. Paul which seeks to prepare students for thoughtful and informed living in the Christian gospel. It is important to combine the mission statement and the comment concerning teaching the mind to think. We need to think for ourselves what it means for us in our profession or our hobbies what it means to live within the context of the Christian Gospel and how we can convey that to the world around us.

Ending weeks

This week was the final week of the project. Being I have reached the goal in hours I have started to terminate the early morning attendances of Iron men, however, I still love to go to the ministries of the Alley church. This week I focused more on baptism and the meaning it holds.

The Week of Spring Break

I did not do any work on site with my actual project this week and that was nice it taught me that a break is needed every so often from something you have worked so hard on. Sometimes you miss what is happening around you because you are so focused on one specific thing. I guess I never realized how many different ways the problem of spiritual deficiency can be tackled. It was great to have this revelation. It was had to work on writing the chapters but that is my own fault for procrastinating until break.

Faith and Love

This week I have been spending a lot of time reading scripture on faith living as love. It has been an interesting experience as reading scripture always is. It has really become apparent to me how you can relate these passages to a ministry and how important these passages are. I hope that I can continue to execute these passages in ministry.

Galatians 5

This week I have been spending a lot of time reading Galatians 5. It has been an interesting experience. It has really connected in my mind how you can relate these passages to a ministry, and to peoples' lives. The words in the 2nd verse can be substituted with almost anything that a person would struggle with.

Spiritual Deficiency?

I started thinking this week, "what really matters?" Does it matter that we have the right set-up on Sunday mornings? Does it really matter how many people we get and how much they put in the offering box? These questions really got a hold of me this week and I started questioning why people argue and focus on these meaningless points when they should be working on talking about Jesus. These questions really helped me dive into what spiritual deficiency really means and looks like.

January 14-28 (weeks 7-8)

I thought back this week to how ministry is not defined to a specific place. In Worship for Lutherans we discussed possible locations that a church could meet and the types of worship they could do. I think I have learned a lot in the past two weeks both through the men's ministry and set-up on Sunday mornings.

A Location for ministry?

I had a thought this week that ministry is not defined to a specific place. We were discussing a potential new venue location. There was discussion about whether moving would be abandoning our original vision of ministry.

This week

On Friday morning, Shane and I once again went to the men's ministry breakfast that occurs weekly at Caribou Coffee in Cottage Grove MN. The breakfast is a gathering time with coffee in association with a small Bible study. Shane and I also met with Pastor Ben Griffin about the next step in our internships. It will be likely that we will meet weekly after this Men's breakfast.

Journal Nov 5-11

On Friday morning, Shane and I once again went to the men's ministry breakfast that occurs weekly at Caribou Coffee. The breakfast is a gathering time with coffee and some basic breakfast foods in association with a small Bible study. Proverbs was the focus of our study again.

Shane and I went on Sunday morning to help out the Alley. There is a team that helps with set-up every week. As interns we are also asked to interact with the community before and after the worship service. It has been amazing to get to know some members of the community.
