About me :)

My name is Heather Huckstadt, and I'm from Bloomington-Normal, Illinois (yes, there is a town called Normal, and I went to high school there).  I am a sophomore at Concordia this year.  I never know what to put when I am introducing myself in these sort of things.

I love living in the Twin Cities while I'm at Concordia because there is so much culture--that is probably what really drew me to it, besides the ESL Education program.  I used to think I wanted to teach ESL, but I recently changed my mind and decided I would be better off doing bilingual social work. Concordia doesn't have a social work degree or a Spanish major yet, but I'm working stuff out.  I am double majoring in sociology and Spanish (major still in development?) and then hope to get a Masters in Social Work.  Then I can work at a community center or agency that helps Hispanics with troubles they may face due to immigration complication, language barrier, etc. I decided that this is really what I want to do because of the volunteer work I did in the last year at my local community center and an agency in Minneapolis.

I'm kind of obsessed with volunteering--I would do it full time if there was any way of surviving.  Here, I work with the Hispanic Outreach director to translate birth certificates, write letters of recommendation, write letters of affidavits, help with random problems that clients may have, and do a little bit of interpreting.  I also babysit on Friday nights for the Latina Women Support Group, where I met some amazing people, especially the kids, who amaze me with their bilingual skills. In Minneapolis, I volunteer with La Oportunidad, an organization that works with many groups to keep trouble out of the community.  Last semester, I went to a school twice a week to work with an after school program that focused on various aspects of Latino culture.  It's really rewarding to use one's gifts to serve others and learn at the same time. I love it!

I'm also kind of obsessed with working--when I have the right job, that is. Right now, I'm babysitting, but at school, I work at the CALL (Community Action, Leadership and Learning) Center. It's awesome. Once we start hogging the tunnel with posters, you will be able to see me in action. :) If you ever need help finding a service activity or want to know about a service trip or the Leadership Certificate Program, I can help you out or introduce you to Kelly, who is pretty amazing.  I also pretty much run the on-campus food shelf, so if you ever want to volunteer to help run that, let me know (not sure what I'm going to be doing this year because I have a class during part of the time it's open again!)

There's not really much else to say.  I really like country music and a lot of Latin as well. I watch way too much tv and sleep more than most people but am still tired. I'm constantly online rather than doing something more productive, so add me on facebook. :) I'm really excited to see all the gammas in the fall and to meet the deltas as well! :)
