Concordia's football team played their homecoming game against the Mankato Mavericks this weekend. The game began with fireworks and the traditional singing of the national anthem. The stands were filled with fans dressed in blue and gold to show their support. The initial excitement quickly dwindled as the Mavericks scored touchdown after touchdown, with a score of 41 to 0 near the end of the second quarter. With the game going poorly Concordia's once hopeful fans became anxious for the carnival to start. Interestingly, the Bears began to turn the game around once people left the stands for the carnival. In the end the Bears still lost, but was more respectable than the score at half time.
The game fits into this year's focus in Honors, "being human and Christian in an interconnected world," in that it is an excellent example of what it is to be human. Fans and football players alike experienced excitement, joy, disappointment, pride, and hope throughout the game. Emotions are a huge part of the human experience. The way the Bears' playing seemed to improve as the stands emptied shows how much of an effect emotions can have on human beings. The game also fits this year's focus because although the fans were composed of different age groups, races, religions, and socioeconomic groups they were all there for the purpose of cheering on the Bears. That common goal brought everyone together.
I was among the fans disappointed by the outcome of the game, but I still enjoyed watching. It was very interesting to see how the crowd reacted to each development. It is rare for me to see such a large group of people so united. I learned that you do not have to understand the nuances of football to appreciate the game. Part of the fun comes from interacting with the people in the stands around you.
