Digging Day 1

We began the long digging process in 3 squares and mine was E8. The goal of digging in E8 is to find the road that leads away from the church and the corner of the massive building along the street. The morning began out cloudy and there was a cool breeze off the water so the working conditions didn't seem to be too bad for the first day. The tractor moved some of the debris off that was located off the side of the square to remove any hazards. Our digging was soon interrupted by massive rocks that were hiding just under the surface. Because we did not know what secrets these large rocks held; after breakfast we troweled down about a foot around the rocks. After consulting Dr. Schuler the E8 team then proceeded to try to remove the rocks. A couple of squats and team carries later we had removed most of the large rocks from that layer. The day seemed to be quickly over, and it was off to the Sea of Galilee to swim! It was a great first day and I am looking forward to more days to come.
