Shalom Aleichem!

Today we started right away as usual and tackled that final last bulk! We cleared it after breakfast, and then started sweeping the floor! A few days ago Darryl referred to me as "Rock Boy" and his usual name is Mongo!

At the end of the day we had F9 and F10 all cleared out! Besides the big rocks that will wait until we take all the dirt out from G9 so we can take the rocks through the door way! I am the person all the way to the right! At the end of the day we would have to fill buckets, and lift them up about 7 ft to the person who would take them from us and pass them to the wheel barrow Until then.

F9.F10.jpg
Tomorrow is the start of our free weekend, and a group of us want to go to Tiberius! I think we are going! Until then.

I also got to open the second to last letter my girl back home wrote for me! After reading it I was pretty homesick, and tossed between not wanting to leave here, and wanting to get home really bad!! Haley, than you for the letters so far, and I can't wait to read the last one!! :)

Shalom Aleichem!

Today is the day after I found the mosaic floor, and it was time to clean the surface! But unfortunately I was needed elsewhere on the dig for heavy lifting, but I understand why! We had to keep working on clearing out that room. The remains of the bulk had to come out today, and so that is when Dr. Schuler made a special rock moving team to clear that out. The team was Darryl, John, Dave, Kyle, Felicia, and myself! We cleared about half of the bulk, and we are going to get the rest of it tomorrow!

Here is a picture of the mosaic floor all clean!

Also, I am really excited because I get to open another letter from my girl, and she has pre-written letters for me to read while I am here!! Until then.

Shalom Aleichem!

Today we woke up at the Youth Hostel, and ate breakfast there at 7:30am, and we left for Masada at 8:15am.

Masada is about 1000 feet in elevation, and we are thinking it was about 1500 foot hike up the Snake Path. The tour guide book said a good hikers time up the path takes about 40-45mins. Dr. Rick Marrs, Dave, and I made it in 28mins! And I will jump ahead to going down the mountain, I ran down the mountain in 15mins (don't tell Dr. Schuler because he told me not to run...but it was awesome!!). Dave did not want to run down with me, but Sarah K was close behind! Running down was one of the most craziest things I have ever done!!

7.15.11 069.JPG

Once we were at the top, we got to see another palace of Herod the Great, and Masada was a fortification area, and the Roman sieged up a ramp they built about 2000 years ago. The ramp is still there, and the Romans took the mountain! The Roman camps are still visible, as well! I am not sure what is the better; the Romans taking Masada, or that the people 'may have killed themselves' before the Romans go there, based off of what Dr. Schuler, said, and I may have missed some points here and there! We looked around the top, and went down, here is when i ran down Masada! IT WAS AWESOME!! Probably one of the most fun events for me!

...photo coming soon...

We headed back to Ein Gev after everyone came down! Some people took the trolley, and some people hiked!

Shalom Aliechem!

Well today we started digging again in XX99, and I was back with Darryl again, too! In our square it was Darryl, Anna, and myself, and Trevor was not with us at all today, because he felt sick, so he stayed back. We were a little short on people for our team today, but none the less we still made great progress.

Darryl told Anna and I to start taking the top dirt off as usual, because he had to help supervise Talal with the tractor. So we clear the dirt away on top of the door sill under the lintel stone. So after haling dirt out with turiyah in buckets, Anna continued that after breakfast, and I went over to the door sill, and started clearing the dirt. I finished and got to the basalt door frame, and swept it off. I started to follow the basalt down, and I cleared some of the dirt away even more. While I was sweeping the dirt, I turned up some tessera (pieces of mosaic floor), and these were not like ANY of the other tessera we have found earlier. So I kept sweeping very carefully, and moved more fine dirt. While sweeping I uncovered the corner of a mosaic floor!!! I turned to Anna and whisperer, 'I found a mosaic floor!' because we didn't want to draw too much attention to us, because if we did, then too people would come running, and we were also working right beside the Israeli conservators. Fortunately Dr. Schuler was right on top of the dig site, so we waved him over to us. Showed him the floor, and he was very excited! He told us to keep taking up the dirt, and expose the rest of the floor! So we did, and this was the most exciting thing so far that has happened, not including the trips we have taken!!! Anna and I were going crazy with excitement as we dug up more and more dirt, more and more mosaic floor was underneath!!

Anna-and-Dylan.jpg
Anna and I went as far as we could, and as far as we were told. So we stopped. It was very hard to stop at such an exciting moment!! But, it was getting close to noon, and Anna had to go do surveying. So I decided to sweep off the rest of the fine dirt that was on top of the mosaic floor. As I did that I noticed some black mosaic pieces, and white mosaic pieces. Being that close the colors had not real importance to me at the time, I just thought it was neat to see two different kinds of mosaic. Little did I know, when I stood up to move to another spot in this tight area, I had a more broad view, and noticed that the black and white were not just ordinary pieces placed in the floor, but in the floor was an inscription!!!! :D So, after finding a mosaic floor, and trying to keep it quiet, I had found an inscription, and I was by myself with no one from my team! So Darryl was the closed to me by that time, and I said, 'Boss, come here!' and instantly Darryl radioed Dr. Schuer to come over to XX99! Dr. Schuler came and his face was beaming just as much as mine was! He said, and I quote, "This is absolutely fantastic, this is ABSOLUTELY fantastic!...This is incredible!!"  He asked for a margin chisel, and started scrapping off the top, and also used water and a brush to clean away at each letter! It was in Greek capital letters, so I knew some of it, but not all because I didn't know most of the capital letters. As he did that I wiped away the mud with some wet wipes, and I joking said to Darryl, 'It says welcome to our home!' and just after I said that Dr. Schuler stared reading it and the first word actually said welcome. There is two lines of letters, and even more that we did not put water on yet! We will be clearing it all off tomorrow! So excited!!

Dylan-and-Inscription.jpg
Dr. Schuler then gave me a 'high-five' on the bus as we went done from Hippos!!! THAT WAS AWESOME!!!! And when we got back he gave me a pat on the shoulder saying, "Yep, you are never going to be able to do that in a classroom!"

We had devotions tonight, and I was scheduled to lead. The suggested theme was Matthew 15:29-39, and I have to admit I have only done music for worship, and readings, but never planned the whole thing before, and led it all. I was a little nervous! Until then.

Shalom Aleichem!

Today Darryl's team went over to XX99 square, and moved a lot of rock, and cleared away tractor fill. We made a second level so were were able to bring buckets up and down, and make it a workable area. Our team lost Matt and Christine after today, because the two 'weekers' were done after breakfast today. So we are down to just three now.

Anna, Darryl, and I still worked hard, and made a lot of progress for the amount of people we were missing. Also, I would say that we are all in great shape after climbing up and back down Masada yesterday!

This is what the other team from last week left us with!

And here is what we started dug out.

If you can imagine in the picture taking a right, you would walk under that lintel stone, and through that door way!

Shalom Aleichem,

Today is the trip to the Dead Sea the lowest place on earth, Qumran, Ein Gedi, and Masada! We left at about 7:30am, which means we got to sleep in today!!

7.15.11 020.JPG
The first site we went to was Qumran, where the Dead Sea Scrolls (Scraps) were found in caves.  the cave that wasb closest to us that we could actually see through was cave number 4, and while excavating it, there is a hole on the top of the cave, and one day it will collapse, and that cave will be no more.

7.15.11 031.JPG

The second site we went to was Ein Gedi National Park. We hiked up the trails to find the waterfalls! Yes, waterfalls in the middle of the desert and rocks! This was an amazing site to see, and watch as the fresh waster flowed out from the top of the rocks, and all the way down the rock side. The site is one of the likely spots where David was being chased by Saul and his army, and Saul went 'into the cave' looking for David, took a break, and David came up and cut a piece of this cloth off, as a sign he was there. The story is found in 1 Samuel. The waterfalls were so amazing to see in the middle of the mountains flowing out of the rock.

7.15.11 047.JPG
We also saw where Dr. Schuler first started his digging career. It was really exciting for him to see the progress that they have done, because it has been about 10 years i think since he has seen it, and it was exciting for us to see his reaction as well!

We then headed to where we were staying for the night, which was a Youth Hostel, and in my mind I had envisioned something much more of a primitive, BUT what we stayed in was a very nice Youth Hostel.

We had devotions in the evening, and it was Kyle Sornkess's turn, so we all huddled into his room, and he brought God's word to us, and I really enjoyed it! After we sang the Doxology acapella, that was the most beautiful singing I had heard in a long time! We were so close and everyone was crammed into a tiny room, and the sound was everywhere! Until then.

Shalom aleichem!

Today the usual morning routine 4am wake up 5am digging, and 8am breakfast. Today we started uncovering the floor of E9 and E10, which was very exciting because we had finally reached the floor! We had to just take about 6cm of dirt off the top and there it was, the floor of what we maybe think was a(n) (abandoned) storage room. Our one suggestion that it was an abandoned storage room is because if we would have found jars and broken jars all over the area then that would indicate that it was used as a storage room, BUT since we only found some small pieces of pottery, and only one large pot in pieces that I had came across, leads us to believe that it was abandoned. So we got all of the dirt off of the floor, and started dusting it off with the ends of brooms, and it is not the flattest, most level floor either! I brought up the idea/question that it might be another floor under. Who knows, but Dr. Schuler will be able to tell us soon, since he is the expert!!

In the evening we had devotions with Christine. And we started packing for the Dead Sea trip!! And we are leaving for the Dead Sea at 7:30am. Until then.

Hey everyone,

Well as I am sure that you all know the drill by now just as much as we do, we woke up at 4am, started digging at 5am, and eat breakfast at 8am. Just a little reminder to all that I start blogging in the evening right before I head to bed preferably at 9:30pm, and you are all in the middle of your day at around 1:30pm. And so I try to keep you all updated as much as I can on each day here!

Here is where we eat breakfast every morning!

So during the dig today, we found pottery, which is usual now. We only take larger size pottery, and we are making a lot of ground in our dig site. We found nails, bones, glass, and some metal. The update to E9 and E10 is the following: We stayed there for a little bit, but went over to XX99 to help with moving large rocks again, but then we went back. Darryl's team went back to work, and continued to dig down, and we were about 15 cm from the floor of the room were were in, and so we had to be more careful of what we were digging up. As I went down in the middle of E10 I found large sized bones, and came across many large sized pottery shards that look like they had been broken recently, because the pieces were clean brakes. Someone had recently went through with a pick and loosened up the ground, and I think that is how it broke, but as I started to be more coucious of what I was digging up, I put all of that same pottery in one area, and kept digging donw to find more. I came across a large piece of the base to that pottery. It was in great shape, and so we made an item bucket for itself, and I was to bring it down to the lab. I was told to wash it myself, and I may even get the chance to put it back together!! We will see tomorrow.

By the end of the day we stopped at 8 cm up from the floor of the room, and the rest will be siffted through tomorrow. Our team makers a lot of ground and moves a decent amount of dirt fast. Darryl is a great leader, and we joke back forth with the other teams all the time about everything! Finding the floor was one of the most exciting things this trip so far, because we were able to actually see our progress, and reach the floor, that had about 4-5 meters of dirt and tractor fill, and large rocks.

269724_10150243304991417_588461416_7625581_7600740_n.jpg

This is E9 and E10, and it is a pretty good picture of our work area, you can see the top of the Byzantine wall in the back, and then the Roman outer wall in the front! You also can see the progress we have made, and on top of the Byzantine wall there was a good three feet of dirt. Until then.

Tomorrow I get to open one of the letters from a series of letters that Haley wrote while I am here. I am so excited to open it, because they are the highlight of my day!! :) She has written me one for July 3rd (our nine months together), the 7th, 14th, 22nd, and 29th!!! Can't wait!!! :) Until then.

Hello everyone,

First off I would like to apologize to the people that read this, because this is my first blog site and I am not really sure how to treat it. So far I am just telling you what we have done each day. I should maybe document how my personal experience with this dig is going as well. I will try to do that as the days go on. Forgive me if I fall short.

So the  usual dig routine happened to day, got up at 4am, and went to work at 5am. After breakfast Darryl's team went 'back home' after being in XX99 site location. So we returned to E9 and E10... home sweet home! I enjoyed going back to our old location, because we were making progress, and we could see it. We also were able to have conversation with the other team next to us as we worked as well, and that is really fun!

We all found the usual things today, but right at the end of the day I seem to find the good stuff (also as we work more we get further down, and closer to the floor of the room; which is where the 'good stuff' is). As we were leveling out the site, I came across some thick large pieces of pottery, and some large thinner ones, too! I kept finding more, and they all fit together like a puzzle! There was still some more to go and find, but we had to pack up and head to the bus! So tomorrow I will have to discover more of the pottery.

We finish everyday right at noon, and lunch is waiting for us after we are done, and come down the mountain. After we ate I went back to our room. Darryl who is one of the team leaders and is my team leader had his turn for devotions today, and he had asked me to play the song 'Sometimes He Calms the Storm' by Scott Krippayne ...This is where I lost a good chunk of my blog when it crashed... I was a little upset, BUT I will try to remember what I all said.

Darryl had this amazing boat ride planned for us that coasted $1000. The coast of this trip was funded Christ the King Church (Darryl's home church), and he asked them to help him support this amazing experiences we were so blessed to do. Darryl spoke during his devotion time about the storm in the waters of Galilee, and how the disciples were told by Jesus to go and take their boat out into the water. Well the song that Darryl asked me to sing after his message was the most appropriate song, just check out the link above. Such and amazing experience! Here is the boat:

Hello everyone,

Well today we did the same thing, woke up at 4am in the morning, left for the site, and started to work. The team I am on, Daryl's Team, was moved for one day to do some work in a different area. I am not sure why we got moved, but my guess is that Daryl's team was getting ahead of Johns team, which was right next to ours, and so we had to do some other work over in a different area so they could catch up. Or, in that different area they needed our team to get the hard work done... who knows :P

While I was digging to day I found poetry of course again, not much. I also found a decent size piece of bone. We moved large rock again as well. I absolutely love all of this hard work that we are doing, not too many people find joy in manual labor, and having to work in the heat on top of that, but call me weird, or whatever you want, I enjoy this so much!! It is only a week and three days in, but if I could come back again with out any financial worry, I totally would... and bring Haley along of course!! She would enjoy this just as much as I am right now!

After digging we came back down from the top of the mountain and went to lunch as usual! After that I blogged, and we all helped out with poetry washing. Sarah Rice gave the devotion for today, and she asked me to help with a song of worship, Open the Eyes of My Heart, and the we all went to dinner! After dinner, Kyle, Dave, and I went to the shore and talked for about 2 and half hours, that was well needed for all three of us! We have not been together for a long time, and had our usual great conversations! That was the end of the day, until then!
