"[Jesus] has redeemed me, a lost and condemned human being. He has purchased and freed me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil, not with gold or silver but with his holy, precious blood and with his innocent suffering and death" (Luther's Small Catechism: 2nd Article).
After the fall of man, humans were hopelessly lost in sin and in need of a savior. Jesus came to redeem humans from this sentence. He died to take away my sins and yours; he keeps on giving forgiveness day after day. It can be easy to get lost in sin and not realize what a wonderful blessing this is. Not only are we saved from sin, but also from all evil, including death and the power of the devil. Through Jesus' Perfect Sacrifice, we are free!
"As his [Jesus] own possession he has taken us under his protection and shelter, in order that he may rule us by his righteousness, wisdom, power, life, and blessedness" (Luther's Large Catechism: 2nd Article).
This reminds us that we are not only to follow Christ but also to allow him to rule every part of our lives. We are to display Christ in everything we do. If we allow Christ to be our guide and ruler, he places us under his "protection and shelter" so we are safe from all the tricks of the devil. Christ has redeemed us with his power and we are now his possessions. He has brought us from "death to life, from sin to righteousness, and keeps us there." Amen!
