Well last night I decided to join to tour group going to Gamla and Tel Dan today, instead of hanging around the Kibbutz, and boy am I glad I chose to do that! We got to sleep in until 7:30...which was amazing, but I still woke up at 4:00am...it's funny how your body just gets in that habit. I fell back to sleep quickly though. :)
So we got on a twenty seater bus and made our way to Gamla.
The reserve contains a waterfall, the highest in Israel (Which I did not go see) It's 51 meters high...The archaeological site including remnants of ancient Gamla. And the biggest Griffon Vulture nesting colony in the country...I only hiked down the Ancient trail to see Ancient Gamla...We easily spent 2 hours down there. Here is a little blurb about Gamla from the Brochure thing...
Gamla joined the revolt against the Romans in the year 66CE. Just before th revolt, the residents, led by Josephus Flavius, leader of the revolt in Galilee, hastened to build and fortify the city's walls. The wall was built on the eastern side of the city. It started at the round guard tower on top of the hill, and ended above the Dalyot's riverbed. The easternmost houses of the city and the outer eastern wall of the synagogue of Gamla were made part of the wall. King Agrippa II besieged the rebellious city but was forced to retreat after 7 months. The Romans however, did not give up. Vespasian, who hastened to Judea at the head of three Roman legions and reinforcements, besieged the city once again. 1 month later, the Romans succeeded in breaching the walls for the first time and penetrated Gamla. However, the Jewish defenders succeeded in turning this into a painful and disgraceful defeat and killed most of the Roman Soldiers.

Then we went to Tel Dan. Let me tell you, it is a beautiful place! I can tell why the Danites located there. I'm sure you can look these sites up online and see maps of them. Words and pictures can't quite capture it all. I went to the wading pool..The water was amazingly cold! but it felt good!

Next we went to the Israelite gate..Built of three pairs of pilasters, apparently from the first Temple Period...
Well. I can't upload any more pictures because it's not working. I'll try to edit it tomorrow...If not, you can just look at my pictures on google! they're all there!
But back to my blog! After we visited the Israelite gate, we went to the Canaanite gate. It's from the 18th century BCE, completely intact, with and arched entry, and is one of the oldest complete arches in the world....I got to touch it!!!
Then we went to the "High Place" which is a shrine from the time of the kingdom of Israel, apparently part of a complex built by King Jeroboam son of Nebat (930 BCE)
By that time is was time to head back to the bus, so we missed Pooh Bear's Tree, "Paradise" and the Pistachio lookout. Which I would have loved to go to because I love Pistachios! :)
Well that's all for now.I'll try and put pictures up later
Enjoy
