For those of you who have gotten to know me a little, you may have realized that I am a very indecisive person. I'm not sure why that is and it's something I've always struggled. I often find myself completely torn over simple decisions that really don't matter in the least. Right now I fear that I'm going to run into this with my honors project also.
As of now, I haven't made a decision about which agency I'd like to help with, though I do have a few ideas. Being a freshman who is without transportation and familiarity with the city have been my biggest search restraints up to this point. While this is going to be a big factor for me, I don't want it to be the only reason I chose my agency. Having said that, I'm not sure what other factors I want to consider as I search. I've had some exposure to different social problems in the past, but I haven't had an experience that has called my heart to focus on one specific issue.
Since I'm going into the Director of Christian Education program, my first instinct is to look for a project that would allow me to do some kind of youth ministry. But as much as I'd love to work at a church helping out with a youth program, I feel like that may be too safe of a choice for me. I feel that this project should get me out of my comfort zone and into a place that helps open my eyes to our world a little bit better. Maybe Professor Rock will be able to help me merge those two concepts together.
Right now the organization that I'm looking into the most is the Jeremiah Program, which is located about a mile from campus. Their mission is to transform families from poverty to prosperity by helping single mothers and their children break the cycle of poverty in a campus community. There are many different volunteer opportunities available, from caring for kids while their mothers are in classes to helping out with fundraisers and hospitality.
I'm in no way close to making up my mind. I'm hoping that meeting with Professor Rock and looking more into chapter one of the project will help me overcome my indecisiveness and make a decision about a project that will not only benefit the people I will be serving, but also help me learn more about "The deep hunger in the world" that my vocation might be calling me to assist.
